FREE Cancer Screening

Partners in Wellness Mobile Screening Unit

A mobile screening unit operated by Feist-Weiller Cancer Center’s Partners in Wellness program mitigates the barriers of cost and access for Louisiana residents in need of routine health screenings. Rural and inner city residents have access to mammograms, pap smears, prostate exams, colorectal screening kits, and head and neck cancer screenings aboard the mobile screening unit.

The 40-foot-long mobile screening unit has digital mammography equipment, an exam room, a waiting area and two dressing rooms. The exam room can be used for clinical breast exams, pelvic exams and pap smears, and for general medical exams. Although the unit is designed for women’s screenings, it also is used for prostate screenings for men.

The vehicle has an on-board generator, and is fully wired throughout with both D.C. and A.C. electricity and Internet connectivity. The unit contains a high-speed wireless link to the Rural Health Information Exchange Network, which links rural clinics and hospitals. This connection permits physicians at LSU Health Shreveport to perform consults and read mammograms for women ages 40+ in real-time.

Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Screening

Friday, April 25, 2014
Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, 3rd Floor Surgical Oncology

Each spring, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport directed by Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD, FACS offer a free screening to look for signs of cancer affecting the head and neck region. Oral, head and neck cancer is the sixth most common type of cancer in the United States. This annual free screening takes place in conjunction with the national Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week.

During the last decade, an increasing number of young, non-smokers have developed mouth and throat cancer associated with the human papillomavirus, or HPV. Smoking and chewing tobacco are known to be contributing factors, as well.

The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance sponsors Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week to champion awareness of this disease, which could result in an earlier diagnosis, lower functional disability and higher survival rates.

This screening takes less than 10 minutes and is non-invasive. It includes a basic exam of your ears, nose, mouth, throat and neck. Appointments are recommended but not required. Call 318.675.6262 to sign up.
