Head and Neck Cancer Alliance

Louisiana Chapter

The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance is a national foundation that had its origin in the 1980's as the Yul Brynner Foundation, in honor of the late actor who starred in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical The King and I. The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance today seeks to enable an organized and strategic alliance of all stakeholders to dramatically shift the stage of discovery of head and neck cancers through united and collaborative efforts in prevention, early detection and research.

The Louisiana Chapter of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance is located in Shreveport where there is a strong clinical practice in head and neck surgery at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSU Health Shreveport. Board member Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD, FACS at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the LSU Health Shreveport Dept. of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, leads a dedicated team of physicians in bringing novel molecular targeted therapeutics, chemopreventive agents and state-of-the-art rehabilitative techniques to head and neck cancer patients through a multidisciplinary, comprehensive team approach. Dr. Nathan directs two programs funded by the NIH that have moved forward from the bench to clinical trials: an active translational research program in molecular targeted therapy for head and neck cancer, and chemo prevention with nutraceuticals.

Fellow Board member Jennifer Bland is grateful to see programs that educate the public about the dangers of smoking and early detection of the disease. Bland works to raise money to find a cure for this disease and improving quality-of-life for survivors. The Louisiana Chapter partners with Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the LSU Health Shreveport Dept. of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery to offer FREE head and neck cancer screenings. These screenings are available in multiple locations in north Louisiana thanks to Feist-Weiller Cancer Center's Partners in Wellness mobile screening unit. In 2010, the mobile screening unit traveled to regional hospitals and colleges, a homeless shelter, Barksdale Air Force Base, and anchored a 5K run to provide FREE oral, head and neck cancer screenings and to educate additional segments of the community about the disease.

Mission of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance

  • provide support to head and neck cancer patients throughout the year
  • support ongoing research in head and neck oncology
  • educate children and adults in the disease process, treatment and prevention of head and neck cancer

How can I help?

Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week is a weeklong series of events to promote education and awareness of oral, head and neck cancers, organized through the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance. The Louisiana Chapter works with the national office to promote a greater understanding of the causes of cancers that arise in the nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, mouth, thyroid glands, salivary glands, throat and voice box. Free screenings are provided in many places across the country during this week, and Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSU Health Shreveport is one of them.

One goal of the Louisiana Chapter is to develop funding for head and neck cancer research that benefits local patients. Click here to support the Louisiana Chapter in their quest to find a cure for oral, head and neck cancer, obtain therapeutic devices for patients, and educate the community as they conduct FREE screenings for oral, head and neck cancer. Donate to head and neck cancer research in honor or in memory of a loved one.

A second goal of the Louisiana Chapter is to promote support for research on the national level. Show your support for Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week by donating today! Click here.
