Molecular and Cellular Biology Review for Clinical Fellows

Goal: By completion of this course the student will have reviewed major concepts in molecular and cellular biology and how these concepts apply to cancer development, diagnosis and treatment. The course is divided into 3 sections: (1) basic knowledge; (2) techniques; and (3) special topics. Effectiveness of the course will be assessed by a pre- and post- course test consisting of multiple choice questions. The objectives are as follows.

Objective 1: To understand the underlying principles of molecular and cellular biology that have significant relevance to cancer, such as transcription, translation, angiogenesis, metastasis and invasion.

Objective 2: To understand the principles of techniques used in the diagnosis and staging of cancer, such as PCR, FISH, microarray technology and whole genome sequencing.

Objective 3: To understand specialized topics such as the roles of miRNA, epidemiology, biostatistics, and the role of personalized medicine in oncology.

Textbook:  Robert A. Weinberg; The Biology of Cancer, 2nd edition.

Course Schedule: The course will be taught on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-9 am in the Tiger Room, Feist- Weiller Cancer Center
