Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan visited with KTBS reporters Chrissi Coile and Ed Walsh about oral, head and neck cancer April 26. Dr. Nathan is director of the Head and Neck Surgery clinic at LSU Health Shreveport's Feist-Weiller Cancer Center.

Smoking and smokeless tobacco are major risk factors, especially when combined with alcohol consumption. During the last decade diagnosis of this disease has increased in epidemic proportions in younger, non-smoking populations. These diagnoses are associated with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) possibly due to increased oral sex. Dr. Nathan leads research at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center to help these patients.

Romni DiJohn visited Feist-Weiller Cancer Center to explore laryngectomy, the partial or complete surgical removal of the larynx during treatment of cancer. Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan, director of Head and Neck Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport's Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, described the procedure. Kelly Babcock, Speech Language Pathologist and director of the New Voice Club, emphasized the importance of voice rehabilitation. Laryngectomy patient James Gilmore testified that although it is difficult, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center does offer support and there is life after laryngectomy. James urged everyone to quit bad habits and "save your voice."

Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan is known as one of the best doctors in the nation. One patient in this Shreveport Times article who had throat cancer was a smoker. "When [the throat cancer] came back, I wanted to go to M.D. Anderson because I wanted the best in the nation," Spataro, 86, said. "When I got there, the doctor said, 'You've got the best in the nation right there in Shreveport Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan.'"
