Research Interest

  1. Gliomas Outcomes Project
Contribute to database of outcomes for patients who undergo surgery for glioma to better understand the relationship of practices in the care of these patients on clinical outcomes. Key objectives of the project are to identify opportunities to improve quality of care for patients with glioma, describe diagnostic and treatment strategies and patient outcomes, provide physicians with data to evaluate and improve their practices, publish objective data on temporal trends and regional differences in the care of patients with glioma, and develop hypotheses for future clinical trials.
  2. Stimulators and Inhibitors of DNA Damage in CNS
Use transgenic mice to develop agents capable of selectively blocking the pathological effects of glutamate in injured neurons while leaving the physiological actions of glutamate in non-lesioned areas of the brain unaffected. Our studies center on delineating the mechanisms by which glutamate receptor (NMDA) activation stimulates neuronal NO synthase (nNOS) activity. Other studies focus on identifying cellular targets and gene products that modify cellular signaling pathways that lead to DNA strand breaks, activation of DNA repair enzymes, and energy depletion.
  3. Role of Glutamate Receptors Overactivity in Neuronal Injury
Assess differences in excitotoxic neuronal vulnerability by selectively blocking production of specific NMDA subunits in cerebellar and hippocampal cells using viral mediated gene transfer. These studies allow us to specifically arrest mRNA translation into functional receptor protein, and thus provide unique functional information on individual NMDA receptor subtypes without affecting the other receptor subunits.
  4. Therapies for Brain Tumors
Study the mechanism by which the differential responses in DNA damage and repair take place and the role of vascular cell adhesion molecules in brain tumors and neuronal injury.
